Douglas-Fir

Douglas-firs are medium size to large or very large evergreen coniferous trees. Douglas-fir wood is extensively used in the construction industry because it can withstand high loads.

Similar to pine and larch, the wood of Douglas-firs is also characterised by a strong colour difference between the outer sapwood and the inner heartwood. The width of the splint depends on the age of the tree and the colouring of the splint ranges from yellowish to reddish-white. The colour of the heartwood can be described as ginger or maroon and it may grow darker if it is exposed to light. If the colouring is rather dark, the heartwood of Douglas-firs resembles the heartwood of larch.

Characteristics:

Douglas-fir grains are very straight and even and the splints vary from small to wide. Due to its colouring, Douglas-fir wood is very decorative.
