Glossary
Fir / Spruce
This species of large coniferous evergreen trees can be found in the northern temperate regions of the earth. Spruces are very large when mature and can be distinguished by their whorled branches and conical form.
With regard to the colouring, the sapwood of a spruce tree can hardly be distinguished from its heartwood. As spruce wood is characterised by its smooth pale or light colour, it is often called whitewood. If spruce wood is exposed to light, however, the pale yellow colouring will get darker so that the colouring can be described as ginger. The annual rings of spruce trees vary from small to wide and they can be clearly differentiated from each other. On a planed surface spruce wood may shimmer silkily. Fresh cut spruce wood smells of resin.
Characteristics:
The grains of spruce wood are straight and even. Spruce wood can be described as very light-coloured and the annual rings can be clearly distinguished from each other.
